Relationship of Interleukin-4 and Interleukin-6 with Pigmentation Disorders in Sardasht Sulfur Mustard-Exposed Veterans 20 Years after Exposure
Authors
Abstract:
Aims: Pigmentation disorders are one of the main skin problems due to mustard gas exposure in chemically-injured veterans. The aim of this study as part of the Sardasht cohort study was to investigate the association between IL-6 and IL-4 and pigment disorders in chemically-injured veterans exposed to mustard gas. Materials & Methods: In this study, 500 subjects including 372 people exposed to mustard gas and 128 people as control group were studied. Systematic random sampling was done. 2cc of peripheral blood of each subject was taken and the blood was allowed to be clotted at the room temperature (37°C). Tubes containing the clotted blood centrifuged for 5min and the serum was separated. Serum levels of IL-4 and IL-6 were measured using the ELISA sandwich and kit was determined using ELISA reading apparatus. Mann-Whitney test was used to compare the serum levels of cytokines in the studied groups. Findings: Serum levels of IL-6 in veterans with and without reduction or increase in pigmentation disorders showed no significant difference. But compared with control group, there was a significant reduction in veterans without hypopigmentation disorder, while there was no significant difference between control group veterans with hypopigmentation disorder. Serum levels of IL-4 significantly increased in veterans with hypopigmentation disorder compared with veterans without the disorder. Conclusion: Changes in serum levels of Il-4 and Il-6 may be involved in hypopigmentation.

Correlation of α1-antitrypsin (A1AT), Complement component C5a and Secretory Immunoglobulin A (sIgA) with pulmonary complications; 20 years after sulfur mustard exposure, Sardasht-Iran Cohort Study
Background: Little is known about pulmonary complications induced by Sulfur Mustard (SM), as a chemical warfare agent, especially considering its long term effects. The present study was carried out to investigate the association of α1-antitrypsin(A1AT), Complement component C5a, and Secretory Immunoglobulin A (sIgA) with long-term pulmonary complications on SMexposedindividuals, 20 years after ...

BACKGROUND Sulfur mustard (SM) is an alkylating agent that induces short and long term toxicity on various organs. The aim of this study was to assess the long-term psychological symptoms among samples of exposed to sulfur mustard gas compared with unexposed civilians 20 years after exposure. METHODS This historical cohort study was conducted on 495 civilians of Sardasht and Rabat in two age ...

BACKGROUND Sulfur mustard (SM) is an incapacitating chemical warfare agent, which has been widely employed in particular regions including Iran. We investigated and reported delayed biochemical and hematological complications of SM in severely toxic Iranian veterans 23 years after exposure. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-two Iranian veterans, residents of Khorasan Razavi, poisoned by SM, and suf...

BACKGROUND More than 100,000 Iranian veterans and civilians still suffer from various long-term complications due to their exposure to sulfur mustard (SM) during the Iran-Iraq war in 1983-88. The aim of the study was to investigate DNA damage of SM in veterans who were exposed to SM, 23-27 years prior to this study. MATERIALS AND METHODS Blood samples were obtained from the veterans and healt...
full textThe Role of Serum Level of Interleukin-6 in Severity of Pulmonary Complications of Sulfur Mustard Injuries
Diverse studies suggest that interleukin-6 (IL6), as a member of cytokines family, has a major role in inflammatory processes of airways and lungs. In this study, an attempt was made to determine the serum level of IL6 in sulfur mustard (SM) injured patients and its comparison with controls. The measured IL6 mean level in patients with chemical injuries (0.76±0.3 ng/ml) was significantly higher...
